St. Francis Xavier Credit Union Ltd. was founded in 1947 by Fr. Henry Suttie
S.J. It functioned for some years, but it was financially weak and stagnant.
In December of 1979 it was re-organized by Fr. James Walsh S.J., and under new
management, it has been growing and thriving since.
St. Francis Xavier Credit Union Ltd. is a cooperative financial institution,
having a Cooperative Structure. However, Credit Unions are different from other
financial institutions in several unique ways. They are organized for the
purpose of providing financial services to a certain group of people, the members.
All surplus earnings are returned to its members in the form of dividends and rebates
annually. It is a democratically controlled organization; each member has one vote.
"People Helping People" is the basic philosophy of the Credit Union.
Reasons to Join the Credit Union
You become part owner of a financial institution.
You are entitled to exercise your democratic right by casting your vote
at election or being elected to any one of the committees that run the organization.
You can access credit in the form of loans at a very low interest rate,
1% per month on reducing balance. Loans are insured up to $40,000.
When you borrow from a credit union, your savings remain intact so that while
you repay your loan, your savings continue to grow.
You have the convenience of saving by payroll deduction.
Your savings are entitled to free insurance up to age 65, life savings benefits
up to a maximum of $10,000 based on your savings. If death is by accident,
this benefit amount would double. Plus a funeral benefit to a maximum of $4,000
in the event of death (Womb to the Tomb).
You receive annual dividends and rebates.
Your money invested in term deposits has attractive interest rates.
You have the benefit of exposure to the world of business by becoming involved
in the Board of Directors/Supervisory Committee/Credit Committee of your Credit Union.
Finally, you become one of the millions of persons around the world
who participates in this great movement of social and economic justice.
When Fr. James Walsh S.J. re-organized the Credit Union in 1979, he asked Vicente Canul
to take on the challenging task of General Manager. He still holds that post, and continues
to help the Credit Union thrive. The following personnel assist in the overall efficiency
of the workings of the Credit Union.

philosophy.
